Clefts are the anatomical malformations / deformities that separate two sections of soft or hard tissues lengthwise, which should be joined together in a single organ during their embryonic formation. It is one of the most common maxillofacial malformations and can be present in one or more parts of the oral - nasopharyngeal cavity, which are the hard palate, the soft palate, the upper lip, the lower lip, the alveolar process and the nose. The main types of clefts are cleft lip, the cleft palate, the lip – cleft palate, in which there is a combination of both types and of submucosal schists. The restoration of clefts requires the cooperation of a wider interdisciplinary team that includes the specialties of a special plastic surgeon, prosthetist - dentist, otolaryngologist, speech therapist, audiologist, psychologist and social worker.
