Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is characterized by symptoms of inattention and impulsivity and possibly manifestations of hyperactivity. The symptoms of ADHD already appear in the preschool age, but they become much more obvious at the age when school begins. The causes of ADHD are not yet clear, but most scientists found evidence of the involvement of neurological and genetic factors.
In most circumstances, behavior therapy, if necessary in combination with medication is the most effective treatment for ADHD. Behavior therapy, particularly parent training, is suggested as the first line of treatment for preschool-aged children (ages 4-5) with ADHD before medication is considered. What works best for the child and family may vary. Close monitoring, follow-ups, and making changes as needed are all part of good treatment regimens.
